Featured in the closing credits and on the soundtrack of Good Will Hunting, it was nominated for Best Original Song at the 1998 Academy Awards. An earlier version with different lyrics was recorded at Jackpot! Recording Studio in early 1997 and appears on New Moon. The film version was re-cut at Jackpot!, and the full version is on the deluxe edition of XO. Ross Harris directed the video, in which Smith, in a white suit, walks through Silver Lake in Los Angeles feeding change into expired parking meters so that a following policeman cannot write tickets.
He played it solo on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on 5 March 1998, and an abridged version with the house orchestra at the 70th Academy Awards on 23 March. Reportedly the producers told him it would be played that night whether by him or by someone else. Before the ceremony he said he mainly wanted to go so he could wear his white suit. Afterwards he called the experience surreal and said he sang to the back balcony because Jack Nicholson was sitting about six feet away. Madonna announced My Heart Will Go On as the winner. He also played it on MTV in 1998, though he would often avoid playing it later.
