Eden was the first professional recording the duo made with a bigger company and a proper producer, Robin Millar, who was producing Sade's Diamond Life at the same time. It was finished in the autumn of 1983, but contractual obligations between the group and Cherry Red Records kept it from release until June 1984. By then the pair felt it no longer represented their sound and interests, and they did very little to promote it.
In the months between recording and release, Thorn and Watt took in new influences, mostly the Smiths, with whom they became close. "Each and Every One" was the only single, and it became a UK top 40 hit that surpassed the group's expectations.
The album reached number 14 in the UK. NME ranked it number 20 among its albums of the year for 1984. On the BBC2 programme 8 Days a Week in May 1984, George Michael said he loved Thorn's voice, and Morrissey said he liked at least half of the album and singled out "Another Bridge". By 2012 it had sold around 500,000 copies. Edsel Records reissued it as a two-disc deluxe set in 2012.
