Hull
Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt met at the University of Hull. Both were already signed to Cherry Red Records as solo artists, and Thorn was also in the trio Marine Girls. They formed a duo as a side project in 1982 and took the name from a slogan used by a Hull furniture shop, Turner's Furniture on Beverley Road. Their first release was an EP with a samba version of Cole Porter's "Night and Day", out in June 1982. They made their live debut at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London on 5 January 1983, playing with Paul Weller, and then signed to Blanco y Negro.
Their debut album Eden, made with the producer Robin Millar, reached number 14 in the UK in 1984. Its single Each and Every One reached number 28. Thorn wrote in 2016 that the lyric was misread as a lovelorn lament, when it answered the patronizing tone of male critics writing about Marine Girls. The duo were grouped with sophisti-pop acts such as Sade and Swing Out Sister. Love Not Money followed in 1985 with a move to electric guitar, bass and drums, and Baby, the Stars Shine Bright in 1986 was recorded with an orchestra at Abbey Road.
Idlewild and the long middle
Idlewild came out in February 1988 and reached number 13. The duo made it largely by themselves, mixing acoustic instruments with synthesizers and a drum machine, and its songs deal with motherhood, suburban childhood, relationships and homesickness. Thorn said the record company felt it lacked hits and doubted its quality. In between its singles the pair recorded a cover of Danny Whitten's I Don't Want to Talk About It, which reached number 3 in the UK and was their biggest success to that point. It was added to later pressings of the album.
The Language of Life (1990) was recorded in Los Angeles with the producer Tommy LiPuma, and Worldwide (1991) was self-produced and reached number 29. The acoustic Covers EP reached number 13 in 1992. In mid-1992 Watt became seriously ill, and the duo had to curtail recording and touring for several months.
Missing and Walking Wounded
Amplified Heart appeared in June 1994, a mostly acoustic record produced with John Coxon. Pitchfork's Philip Sherburne later wrote that the duo's "spare, pensive style never sounded more fully realized" than on this album. The album's single Missing did little until Todd Terry remixed it. Their UK label Blanco y Negro had dropped them, but Atlantic in the United States commissioned the remix. It reached number 3 in the UK and number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and spent a full year on that chart without a break. In the same period Thorn sang lead on two songs on Massive Attack's album Protection.
Walking Wounded (1996) moved to a more electronic style, with contributions from Spring Heel Jack and Howie B. It reached number 4 in the UK and number 37 in the United States. Its singles Walking Wounded and Wrong both reached the UK top 10. Temperamental followed in 1999 and reached number 16. Their show at the Montreux Jazz Festival on 15 July 2000 was their last in front of an audience until 2025.
Return
The duo went inactive in 2000. Thorn and Watt married in 2009 and both released solo albums, and Thorn published the memoir Bedsit Disco Queen in 2013. In 2017 they reclaimed the rights to eight of their albums from Warner Music Group. In November 2022 they announced a new album, and Fuse was released on 21 April 2023. It reached number 3 in the UK, the highest chart position of their career. In April 2025 they played two small shows in East London, with more dates added through 2025 and 2026, and a 16-track compilation, The Best of Everything But the Girl, appeared that November.
