Temperamental was released on 27 September 1999 by Virgin in most territories and on the following day by Atlantic in the United States. Thorn and Watt recorded it just after the birth of their twin daughters in 1998. Thorn's involvement was scaled back, Watt took a larger part in writing the lyrics and music, and she recorded most of her vocals in late-night sessions after the twins had gone to sleep. In her memoir she said she ended up as a guest vocalist on someone else's album.

Watt built on the sound of Walking Wounded and brought in techniques he had learned as a resident DJ, including crossfading, back spinning and filtering. The album reached number 16 in the UK and number 65 on the Billboard 200, and sold over 500,000 copies worldwide. Five singles came from it, among them "The Future of the Future (Stay Gold)" with Deep Dish, "Five Fathoms" and "Temperamental". The duo's show at the Montreux Jazz Festival on 15 July 2000 was their last concert in front of an audience until 2025.
