Apple wrote the song and Jon Brion produced it. Epic released it as the album's lead single in the United States on 5 October 1999 and in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2000. Apple said she wanted to explore the ups and downs of a relationship, and that the beat never changes even when the middle of the song confuses the listener. Brion wanted Matt Chamberlain on drums for machine-influenced parts with a human feel, and played Apple a busy bass line on a keyboard in his kitchen. Both stressed that the rhythms and structure were already Apple's. The Guardian described dissonant piano and skittish percussion, a strings-soaked midsection that switches to a lilting 6/8, and then the beast let back in.

It reached 20 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, 29 on Adult Top 40 and eight on the Triple-A chart, and 33 in the UK, her first and so far only single to reach the top 40 there. Paul Thomas Anderson directed the video, shot in Pasadena with a vintage hand-cranked camera, which is why her mouth does not match the lyrics. It was nominated for a 2000 Billboard Music Award for Best Pop Clip of the Year.
