The song is named after a girl who attended middle school with Apple. Apple recalled being rejected by a group of popular girls, after which Shameika asked why she was trying to sit with them and told her she had potential. The line "Sebastian said I'm a good man in a storm" refers to a remark by the bassist Sebastian Steinberg. The Guardian called it more straightforwardly autobiographical than Apple's usual mode and said the chaotic piano drops out at the moment of realization.
It went to adult alternative radio on 27 April 2020 as the album's lead single and peaked at 19 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart in June, Apple's first entry there since Fast as You Can in January 2000, the longest gap on that chart. Matthias Brown directed a video released on 20 November 2020, which features the voice of Shameika Stepney, who reunited with Apple after the album. The same day Stepney released Shameika Said, with vocals from Apple and samples of the song. It won Best Rock Performance at the 63rd Grammy Awards. Apple pledged two years of earnings from its television and film placements to the Harlem Children's Zone.
