Kline first released it in October 2013 as the opening track of I'm Sorry I'm Hi Let's Go, one of her self-released Bandcamp collections, and rerecorded it with the full band for Next Thing, where it is the second song on side two. It came out as the album's fourth single on 11 March 2016, when Stereogum premiered it and called it one of the best Frankie C songs.

Reviewing the album for Consequence of Sound, Nina Corcoran picked it as an essential track and heard a song that sets love inside a blurry reality while questioning how deep and sincere relationships are. Pitchfork's Kevin Lozano listed it among the album's songs that had earlier existed in acoustic form.

Live

setlist.fm logs 47 performances. It was in the set at the Next Thing release show at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn on 2 April 2016, and later that year at the Irenic in San Diego and Webster Hall in New York. In 2017 Kline and David Maine played an acoustic version in Reykjavik at Iceland Airwaves, which FLOOD premiered that May alongside Too Dark. The upload in the hypersongs web is the Next Thing studio recording, released as the single.
