Fire and Water

Their third album and biggest success: seven songs including "All Right Now", with Roy Baker helping at the desk.
Free, 1970

Fire and Water was produced by Free, with Roy Baker contributing, especially on engineering; Albumism says Roy Thomas Baker, later a Queen producer, helped out behind the boards. Rodgers sings, Kossoff plays guitars, Fraser bass, acoustic guitar and piano, and Kirke drums and percussion. Mike Sida devised the cover and Richard Polak was the photographer. It reached number two in the UK for 18 weeks, 17 on the US Billboard 200, 25 in Australia and 30 in Germany, and is their most successful album.

AllMusic's Matthew Greenwald gave it four and a half stars, writing that by 1970 Free presented itself to the world as a complete band in every sense of the word. Classic Rock Review's Ric Albano calls it a breakthrough rooted in blues rock.
