Baby

Caetano Veloso's song, first a duet on the Tropicalia manifesto album of 1968 and then her solo recording of 1969, her most played song in concert.
Gal Costa, from Gal Costa (1969)

Veloso alone wrote "Baby". It was first released on Tropicalia ou Panis et Circencis in 1968, side two's first track, as a duet by Gal Costa and Veloso, 3:31, recorded in May 1968 at RGE Studios in Sao Paulo with Manuel Barenbein producing and Rogerio Duprat arranging. She recorded it again for her 1969 solo album, 3:33, track ten. The Fader calls that version her most popular track and one of the most beloved recordings in Brazilian history, though Infopedia and Rolling Stone Brasil date the song to 1969. Rolling Stone Brasil ranks it 30th on its list of the greatest Brazilian songs. An Estadao analysis, seen only in a search summary, says Veloso wrote it especially for Maria Bethania, who chose not to take part in the record, and that is unverified.

Other recordings include a live Buenos Aires version from 1978 (3:04), the Acustico MTV live version of July 1997 (4:04), Recanto Ao Vivo (4:45), a 1992 version on Gal (3:34), a version with Roupa Nova (3:48) and a 2021 duet with Tim Bernardes on Nenhuma Dor. Quinteto Ternura recorded it in 1974, arranged by Arthur Verocai, reissued as a 7-inch by Mr Bongo in 2024. Setlist.fm lists it as her most played song, in 48 setlists, ahead of "Forca estranha" (30) and "Vaca profana" (30), and it was in sets of 2022 at the Breve Festival in Belo Horizonte on April 9 and at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin on July 13. No quote from Costa about its meaning and no video were found.
