Recorded at Noise New York with Kramer and released on Rough Trade, with a title borrowed from Ornette Coleman's 1961 album. Kramer is credited with a Mirage synthesizer, a cheap flute and backing vocals. Wareham later said they probably rushed into making it, that things were tense in the studio, and that Fourth of July, Listen, the Snow Is Falling and Hearing Voices were vintage Galaxie 500. Yang remembered the sessions as a sad and angry time, in a studio that was being torn apart. Krukowski said he finished the lyric of Sorry because Wareham had run out of words.

Ned Raggett of AllMusic called it arguably the band's most accomplished record. Select's Andrew Perry heard melodies more brilliant and inspirationally unsophisticated than before, and Pitchfork's Mark Richardson said it had the richest production of the three, with Yang's Yoko Ono cover a good argument for her fronting her own project. The 2010 reissue reached 18 on the British independent album breakers chart.
