Calypso

The 2020 album inspired by the Greek island of Gavdos.
Gigi Masin, 2020

Label
Apollo (R&S)

Calypso came out on the R&S imprint Apollo. Masin built it from warm sounds looped as small tape pieces, and some tracks were made in half an hour. It uses the myth of Ulysses as a mirror and draws on Ogygia and its supposed real counterpart, Gavdos, an island south of Crete that Masin had wanted to visit for decades.

Colin Joyce reviewed it for Pitchfork in March 2020. He described it as nearly 90 minutes long, with a rhythm on Bellamore that he likened to Portishead and the Los Angeles beat scene and a trumpet on Nefertiti that he said recalls Jon Hassell. Masin has said his music is a sort of non-idea, which spares him many decisions. Saxophonist Ben Vince plays on On Demons and Diamonds.
