Clouds is the second of the eight Venetian pieces, grouped as Otto Prospettive Veneziane, that fill Masin's side of his 1989 Sub Rosa split with Charles Hayward. He made it at Bunker Studio in Padova in spring 1989 with Alessandro Pizzin and Brans Pardurich. Far Out heard muffled polysynths, reverb that sounds underwater and drops of piano.
To Rococo Rot sampled it heavily, without credit, on Die Dinge des Lebens in 1999. Björk's It's in Our Hands, a 2002 single co-produced with Drew Daniel of Matmos, is built on it and reached 37 in the UK. Post Malone's Big Lie, on Stoney (2016), contains an interpolation of it. Masin was dumbfounded at first, then proud, though he told CDM that the way samplers treat the people they borrow from can be horrible.
A Japanese 12-inch on Ele-king and P-Vine in 2016 paired the original with a remix by Inner Science, and Otto Taimela released acoustic covers of Clouds and Waterland in 2024. The upload in the hypersongs web is the 2017 remastered reissue of the 1989 recording.
