Winter in America
The title track, which is not on the original 1974 LP; our upload is the whole album.
Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson, from Winter in America (1974)
The song "Winter in America" is not on the 1974 album, whose original LP had nine other tracks; its studio version is on The First Minute of a New Day (6:09, 1975), and a live version from the Wax Museum in 1982 (8:23) was added to the 1998 CD. Setlist.fm shows Brian Jackson's projects playing it seven times, ten with split credits. The recording we hold is a complete upload of the album under that title, by a channel named Discos Redondos, and whether it follows the original LP or a CD reissue with bonus tracks is not established.
Within the album, "Peace Go with You, Brother" bookends the LP and is Rhodes-driven, compared with the In a Silent Way era of Miles Davis, about the divisions that come with education and success; "Rivers of My Fathers" is the longest track, with water as a metaphor for home and freedom and the place named only in the last seconds; "The Bottle" was inspired by men lining up daily outside the Log Cabin liquor store in Washington to return bottles for a discount, and was the only single, covered by Brother to Brother (1974, number nine on the soul chart), Joe Bataan (1975), C.O.D. (1983), The Christians (1992) and Paul Weller (2004) and sampled by NxWorries on "Suede"; "Song for Bobby Smith" was inspired by a four-year-old boy who asked for a song; and "H2Ogate Blues", the last track recorded on October 15, 1973, is a spoken Watergate piece, by Scott-Heron's 1998 liner notes a single take as a live ad-lib over a blues backing. A source dispute: Wikipedia calls "Your Daddy Loves You" a dedication to his daughter, while Jackson says it was about no one in particular.
