Pull Up to the Bumper
The third single from Nightclubbing, a 1981 dance hit that Blackwell held back from Warm Leatherette.
Grace Jones, from Nightclubbing (1981)
"Pull Up to the Bumper" was released as a single in June 1981, 3:40 on the single and 4:41 on the album, produced by Blackwell and Sadkin. The Wikipedia infobox lists Jones, Kookoo Baya and Dana Manno, while the Nightclubbing tracklist credits Koo Koo Baya, Ronald Dunbar, Jones and Robbie Shakespeare, which is unresolved. The instrumental was recorded in 1980 in the Warm Leatherette sessions at Compass Point, Blackwell felt it did not fit that album, and it was completed for Nightclubbing; the Rock and Roll Globe says the lyrics were written by Jones and her friend Dana Mano. The players are Jones, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Barry Reynolds, Mikey Chung, Wally Badarou and Uziah Thompson.
Its suggestive lyrics led some radio stations to refuse airplay, and in a 2008 Q interview Jones said they were not necessarily meant as a metaphor. It reached number two on the US dance chart for seven weeks, five on the R&B chart, number one on the Bubbling Under chart and 53 in the UK in 1981, then 12 in the UK when it was re-released in early 1986 with "La Vie en rose" on the B-side, and is certified silver by the BPI. The first video mixes footage of A One Man Show with excerpts from Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi, and a nine-minute Musclemix appeared in 1986. Paul Morley called it the greatest pop single of all time in 2003, NME placed it eighth among 1981's tracks, and Rolling Stone ranked it 84th in 2022.
Patra released a version on July 18, 1995 (US Hot 100 number 60, UK 50), Coolio sampled it on "Ooh La La" (1997), Deni Hines covered it in 2000 (Australia number 36), Funkstar De Luxe remixed it in 2000, and Gossip performed it with LCD Soundsystem at Coachella 2010. Which version our upload is has not been established.
