The Man Who Died in His Boat is Grouper's ninth studio album, released by Kranky on 4 February 2013. It collects outtakes from the years in which Harris was recording Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill, and the songs date from 2008 to 2010. The cover is a photograph of her mother in Bolinas in 1969, pregnant with her first child. Timothy Stollenwerk mastered it.

Harris explained the title in the press release. As a teenager she walked with her father to look inside the wreckage of a sailboat that had washed up on Agate Beach in Bolinas, California, and felt she was violating a remnant of the man's presence by seeing the evidence of its failure. Pitchfork named Vital a Best New Track on 20 December 2012 and later placed it at 88 on its list of the top 100 tracks of 2013. Metacritic averages 81 from 17 reviews.
