Mama's Hand

Her song of leaving home, named song of the year at the 1996 International Bluegrass Music Awards in a version by Lynn Morris.
Hazel Dickens, from A Few Old Memories (1987)

"Mama's Hand" is track 15 on A Few Old Memories, written by Dickens. The Story Web describes it as recounting the day she left her family's West Virginia home, letting go of her mother's hand, to join siblings in Baltimore and find work, and says she worked on it for years to honor her mother. Another account describes leaving a mining town with a single paper bag of hand-me-downs and dates the writing to the early 1980s; neither is confirmed by a primary source.

Lynn Morris recorded it, and her version was named song of the year at the 7th International Bluegrass Music Awards on September 26, 1996 at the RiverPark Center in Owensboro, Kentucky, with the credit written by Hazel Dickens, recorded by Lynn Morris. Bluegrass Today reports that Alison Krauss sang lead on it in a tribute at the IBMA's World of Bluegrass.
