Smokin'
Their first with Clem Clempson: nine songs recorded in February 1972, self-produced, number six in the US.
Humble Pie, 1972
Smokin' was produced by the band under the name The Pie, Marriott having insisted on producing, with Alan O'Duffy and Keith Harwood as engineers and cover art by Kosh. Marriott plays vocals, guitar, harmonica and keyboards, Clempson guitar, keyboards and backing vocals, singing lead on "Old Time Feelin'", Ridley bass and backing vocals, and Shirley drums and piano on "You're So Good for Me". Guests include Alexis Korner on "Old Time Feelin'", Stephen Stills on backing vocals on "Hot 'n' Nasty", and Doris Troy and Madeline Bell on "You're So Good for Me". Shirley told uDiscover in 2026 that Clempson brought a blues-based style that shaped the nine-minute "I Wonder", and that the covers "Roadrunner" and "C'mon Everybody" grew out of band jams.
It reached number six on the Billboard 200 (year-end 36), 20 in the UK, nine in Australia and 13 in Canada, and went gold in the US. AllMusic gave it four stars, and the Rolling Stone Album Guide one.
