Stepney and PiL
Jah Wobble was born John Joseph Wardle on 11 August 1958 in Stepney, the son of a postman and a school secretary, and grew up on the Clichy Estate in Whitechapel. His stage name came from a drunk Sid Vicious slurring his surname, and he kept it because he reckoned nobody would forget it.
In May 1978 he began rehearsing with John Lydon, and by July the band was called Public Image. Its first single, Public Image, reached number nine in Britain that October. On Metal Box (1979) Wobble played bass on most tracks and drums on two, and his heavy dub lines are central to the standing of a record that later placed in Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums and Pitchfork's best of the 1980s. Robert Christgau heard "a full-bodied superaware white dub." His 1980 solo debut, The Legend Lives On... Jah Wobble in "Betrayal", used unauthorised Metal Box material, and PiL fired him late that year.
Cologne
The journalist Angus MacKinnon introduced him to Holger Czukay, and the meeting produced the How Much Are They? EP on Island in 1981, credited to Czukay, Wobble and Jaki Liebezeit and dedicated to Ian Curtis. Its title track, How Much Are They?, became a club record in New York and got Wobble flown to Germany to record more. Trouser Press thought the four songs showed his talent far better than his first solo work. Virgin later collected them on Full Circle with two long radio-collage pieces.
Czukay told him his playing was like Miles Davis: one note and everyone knows who it is. Wobble came to call Liebezeit the engine room and the most special person he had ever met. He formed The Human Condition in 1981 and Invaders of the Heart in 1982, made Jah Wobble's Bedroom Album, and in 1983 cut the Snake Charmer EP with The Edge and Czukay, whose title track became a Paradise Garage staple.
Invaders of the Heart
Wobble stopped drinking in 1986 while making Psalms and has stayed sober since. From 1987 he worked on the London Underground while he re-formed Invaders of the Heart, and the live Without Judgement followed in 1989. Rising Above Bedlam (1991) was his commercial peak and was shortlisted for the first Mercury Prize. Its single Visions of You, sung with Sinéad O'Connor, reached number 35 in Britain and number ten on the American modern rock chart.
Island released Take Me to God and Heaven and Earth in the mid 1990s, and he made Spinner (1995) with Brian Eno in his Bethnal Green home studio. Ambient and neoclassical records followed on his own 30 Hertz label, among them Requiem, The Celtic Poets and Deep Space. He describes his bass playing as heavy, modal and sparing, and says he plays repetitively because it calms anxiety.
Later work
He joined The Damage Manual in 2000 but left rather than tour America, and the same year took a humanities degree from Birkbeck after four years of part-time study. In 2009 he published the memoir Memoirs of a Geezer and turned down PiL's reunion, saying the offer was too low. His Chinese Dub Orchestra works with his wife, the guzheng player Zi Lan Liao, and the album Chinese Dub won a Songlines award. He reunited with Keith Levene as Metal Box in Dub in 2012, and Cherry Red gathered his career on the six-disc Redux in 2015.
In the 2020s his main partner has been the guitarist Jon Klein, formerly of Specimen and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Klein played Levene's parts when Wobble performed Metal Box: Rebuilt in Dub in full at Cleopatra Records' 30th anniversary show in London in October 2022. The pair co-wrote and co-produced A Brief History of Now (2023), with its video track I Am, I Am, I Am, and followed it with Automated Paradise in 2026, their third album together. In 2025 he also released Old Fashioned Ways with Ken Boothe.
