Before the Sex Pistols broke up, Wobble and John Lydon experimented musically, and Wobble wrote a simple repetitive bass line that Lydon used to write the song. It was PiL's first single, released in October 1978. It entered the UK chart on 21 October 1978 at number 21 and peaked at number nine on 4 November. The B-side was "The Cowboy Song". Lydon sang on it, Keith Levene played guitar, Wobble bass and Jim Walker drums.
Lydon said it was a slagging of the group he used to be in, not a song about fans. NME named it the 242nd greatest song of all time in 2014, and Stylus Magazine named its bass line the 18th best of all time in 2005. The Germs, Pearl Jam, Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Long Ryders, Feeder, Menswear, Scrawl and Alphabeat have covered it.
