Darkness / Earth in Search of a Sun
The 4:30 opening of The First Seven Days, played on every instrument by Hammer himself.
Jan Hammer, from The First Seven Days (1975)
"Darkness / Earth in Search of a Sun" opens the album and was written by Hammer, recorded in 1975 at Red Gate Studio. The credited guests, Johnson and Kindler, are not on this track, so Hammer plays everything. Synthtopia calls it one of the album's best cuts: it begins with what sounds like Mellotron string pad sounds and builds through eerie Moog howls into a rock-fusion number, Hammer bending the pitch of the synthesizer until it releases an electric-guitar-like sound. The closer, "The Seventh Day", revisits ideas from it.
