Back, Baby
The first single from On Your Own Love Again, a nylon-string song that Troye Sivan sampled in 2023.
Jessica Pratt, from On Your Own Love Again (2015)
"Back, Baby" was written by Pratt and runs 3:55; MusicBrainz lists ISRC US58L1560608. It was shared as the first single from the album in early November 2014, and Flood called it a nylon string folk tune resembling early Jackson Browne. Pratt said it was taped on cassette in a small bedroom about ten years before 2023. Reviewers, among them Rolling Stone, Line of Best Fit and Nialler9, read it as a breakup song, and no statement from her on its meaning was found. She chose it as the opener, she told Stereogum, because on her European tour it was the one people would remember first.
Troye Sivan's "Can't Go Back, Baby" on Something to Give Each Other (2023) samples it; Sivan told the Guardian he always thought it was a really special song, and Pratt told Pitchfork that like everybody else she finds him irresistible; Stereogum's October 2023 piece misnames the sampled song "Baby, Baby". Far Out says it is the most-streamed track in her catalogue. She played it for WGN in Chicago before her Pitchfork Festival set in July 2015, and setlist.fm shows it as her third most played song, in 67 setlists. Covers were not checked.
