Sapokanikan was the lead single from Divers and the second track on the album. It was revealed on 10 August 2015, the day Divers was announced. Newsom had played it live well before that: at the Treasure Island Festival on 14 October 2012 she performed a new song then called Look and Despair, which was renamed Sapokanikan.
On the record, Neal Morgan plays drums, Ryan Francesconi plays guitar, bass guitar, bouzouki and baglama, Judith Linsenberg plays recorder and Andy Strain plays trombone, while Newsom sings and plays piano and a Schiedmayer celesta. The Guardian's Laura Snapes ranked it 19th among her 20 best songs, hearing jaunty piano and sweetly rambling verses that hide a deep history, and a song that contemplates the passing of time through landscapes and paintings. NPR put it at 129 on its 2018 list of the 200 greatest songs by 21st-century women.
