Sawdust & Diamonds is the third song on Ys and runs 9:54. Pitchfork's Chris Dahlen called it the centerpiece, performed while the strings take a smoke break. Laura Snapes of the Guardian ranked it 14th among her 20 best songs, hearing Van Dyke Parks's arrangements stripped back to leave Newsom, her harp and a determined vocal, with Steve Albini's recording in the spotlight. Ben Sollee covered it on the Oxfam tribute Versions of Joanna in 2010.
