Prine said he named the label Oh Boy because the expression suits both good and bad situations, and that he was inspired by Steve Goodman's modest success with Red Pajamas Records. The first Oh Boy release was a 1982 Christmas single, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. Aimless Love followed in 1984, produced by Prine and Jim Rooney, except People Puttin' People Down, which Goodman produced. His co-writers included Roger Cook, Shel Silverstein, Donnie Fritts, Spooner Oldham and Bobby Braddock.
Unwed Fathers, written with Braddock, was later covered by Tammy Wynette and Johnny Cash. Bob Dylan covered People Puttin' People Down in concert, and a mailman gave Prine a tape of it. It was the first Prine album not to chart. In Rolling Stone in 1985, Don Shewey wrote that Prine was still in top form.
