Knox and Jerry Phillips produced it at Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis, and Sam produced Saigon and How Lucky. Prine told Fricke he wanted something noisy, like hearing a friend's band practice in the basement, and that they ended up with about five hundred hours of tape. He wrote or co-wrote five of the ten songs. The rest include Arthur Gunter's Baby Let's Play House, Charles Underwood's Ubangi Stomp, Roly Salley's Killing the Blues and Floyd Tillman's This Cold War with You, and Billy Lee Riley duets on No Name Girl.
The reaction was divided. The New York Times called it Prine's masterpiece to date, and Rolling Stone's Dave Marsh called it an almost unqualified disaster. Prine said years later that people came up to apologize for not liking it at the time.
