Both Sides Now
An orchestral album of standards and two of her own songs, arranged by Vince Mendoza.
Joni Mitchell, 2000
- Released
- February 2000
The seventeenth studio album pairs classic songs with orchestral arrangements by Vince Mendoza, who also conducted, and includes two of Mitchell's own, A Case of You and Both Sides, Now. The co-producer Larry Klein described it as a suite following a relationship from flirtation through disillusionment to acceptance. A limited chocolate-box edition appeared on 8 February 2000 and the jewel case edition on 20 March.
It won the 2001 Grammys for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album and, for the title song, Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist, and a Juno for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. On tour she played it in album order, opening with Debussy's Nuages. Stereophile gave it 4.5 stars, and AllMusic's William Ruhlmann called her a master of phrasing and tone.
