Mitchell made her second album at A&M Studios in Hollywood, playing acoustic guitar and keyboards with Stephen Stills on guitar. She produced every song except Tin Angel, which Paul A. Rothchild produced, and she painted the cover self-portrait herself. The red flower in it is a prairie lily, the provincial flower of Saskatchewan. Chelsea Morning and Both Sides, Now had already been recorded by other singers by the time she began.

It reached 22 in Canada and 31 on the Billboard 200, won the Grammy for Best Folk Performance for 1969 and was certified gold in the United States in 2001. Robert Christgau felt that without David Crosby's production her voice sounded malnourished, yet he singled out three songs as excellent. AllMusic's David Cleary called it an essential release, and Pitchfork's Jessica Hopper called it a landmark. Songs to Aging Children Come was re-recorded for the film Alice's Restaurant after Mitchell declined to perform it herself when royalty talks failed.
