Samba Esquema Novo is the 1963 debut album of Jorge Ben, and it carries the original recording of Mas que Nada. Arrangements are credited to Meirelles, Lindolfo Gaya, Luiz Carlos Vinhas and Carlos Monteiro de Souza, with Meirelles e os Copa 5 accompanying, and Armando Pittigliani produced it and wrote the sleeve notes. When it came out, the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo believed it would soon vanish from the shops like his earlier 78 rpm releases.

It lasted. The Guardian wrote that "Ben's debut album took bossa nova and twisted it for the 60s, creating an intensely rhythmic pop sound." Pitchfork put it at number 146 on its list of the 200 best albums of the 1960s, where Edwin "STATS" Houghton wrote that Ben's debut album "is a bossa nova masterpiece". Rolling Stone Brasil listed it among the 100 best Brazilian albums in 2007, and it ranks 30th in Discoteca Básica's list of the 500 greatest Brazilian records.
