Mas que Nada was first recorded in 1962 by Zé Maria on the album Tudo Azul - Bossa e Balanço, with Ben singing lead vocals across that record. Ben cut his own version in 1963 for Samba Esquema Novo, where it runs 3:02, and it was also issued as a single. Tamba Trio recorded it in 1963 and Luiz Carlos Vinhas in 1964.

Sérgio Mendes and Brasil '66 covered it on their 1966 debut album, and the American single reached number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the Easy Listening chart. Tamba Trio's recording was used in Nike's Airport '98 advertisement before the 1998 World Cup. In 2006 Mendes redid it with the Black Eyed Peas for Timeless, which reached number six in the UK. The Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone voted it the fifth greatest Brazilian song, and it entered the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013.
