"The Kiss" is the second track on Heart Food, 4:36, written by Sill and produced by her and Henry Lewy. It was finished around March 15, 1972, and she debuted it in the BBC session on March 23, 1972, saying it was written seven or eight days earlier. Kasper Nijsen of Something Else! hears religious and romantic imagery blended, the kiss as communion, with a striking harmonic modulation in the bridges. Andy Partridge has called it the most beautiful song ever recorded. Our upload is titled Remastered and is the label's audio from a reissue, which one is not stated.
She played it solo at the piano at the Paris Theatre on March 23, 1972, at Aeolian Hall on April 5, 1972, on Radio 1 In Concert on February 14, 1973 and at the Golders Green Hippodrome on February 15, 1973, and on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1973. Setlist.fm counts five performances. Jane Siberry with Ghostland covered it in 1998, Bonnie Prince Billy in 2004, Matt Alber in 2011, and Fleet Foxes played it live in 2024.
