Drag

A covers album built around smoking, from Don't Smoke in Bed to The Joker.
k.d. lang, 1997

Released
10 June 1997
Label
Warner Bros.
Producer
k.d. lang and Craig Street
Length
52:26

Most of its songs share a smoking motif, though some deal more broadly with dependence or addiction. Lang and Craig Street produced it, Danny Kopelson engineered it and Jimmie Haskell wrote the orchestration. Her version of the Valley of the Dolls theme, a Dionne Warwick song, was used in the pilot and the series finale of the Showtime series Nurse Jackie, and Jane Siberry's Hain't It Funny? appeared in the 2002 film Talk to Her. Robert Hilburn of the Los Angeles Times wrote that the heart of the album combined mainstream pop accessibility and torch-driven cabaret intimacy.
