lang chose Owen Bradley to produce it. Bradley, who produced Patsy Cline's best-known work, had opened Bradley's Barn in Mount Juliet in 1961 by converting a barn on a farm outside Nashville, and the album was recorded there with Bobby Bradley as engineer. Buddy Emmons and Hal Rugg played pedal steel, the Jordanaires sang on three tracks, and the Nashville String Machine played arrangements by Bill McElhiney. Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn and Kitty Wells joined lang as the Honky Tonk Angels for the Honky Tonk Angels' Medley, the final track.

The songs came from a wide span of writers, among them Chris Isaak, Roger Miller, Cindy Walker and Bob Wills, Frank Loesser and Harlan Howard. One of them, I'm Down to My Last Cigarette, made it to number 21 in 1988. The album reached number 9 on the Canadian album chart, number 73 on the Billboard 200 and number 9 on Billboard's country albums chart.

Critics were divided over how much of lang was in it. Kristine McKenna in the Los Angeles Times on 29 May 1988 wrote that lang sounded like a dead ringer for her hero Patsy Cline and that the record replicated the mood of a Cline album perfectly. She added that lang respected the style so much that she refrained from leaving her own thumbprint on it. The Toronto Star called it a self-conscious anachronism. Robert Christgau graded it B in the Village Voice and wrote that it was "impossible to suss out her relationship to music she presumably loves."
