The title refers to the Canada-US border, which the 49th parallel defines for much of its length. The record gathers songs by Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Jane Siberry, Bruce Cockburn and Ron Sexsmith, plus a new version of her own Simple, which first appeared on Invincible Summer in 2000. Lang and Mink produced it, with string arrangements by Eumir Deodato, mixing by David Leonard and mastering by Bob Ludwig.
It went platinum in Canada in April 2006 with more than 100,000 copies sold, and double platinum in Australia in December 2007 with more than 140,000.
