Leonard Cohen wrote Hallelujah. Lang recorded it in 2004 on Hymns of the 49th Parallel. She sang it at the 2005 Juno Awards, where it brought the audience to its feet for a two-minute ovation, and at the 2006 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame when Cohen was inducted. Cohen's partner, the singer Anjani Thomas, said afterwards that the song could now be laid to rest.
She sang it at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver on 12 February 2010. In early May that year she filled in at the last minute at the Australian Logie Awards to repeat it, and received an extended standing ovation. It also closed the BBC Four Sessions concert of 3 February 2008, and she sang it again at the 2017 Tower of Song memorial concert for Cohen and at Fire Fight Australia in Sydney on 16 February 2020. Shortly after Cohen died she said she heard the song as being about the struggle between human desire and the search for spiritual wisdom.
