It was the first song recorded for the album. Mike Will Made It developed the beat with the aim of recording it with Gucci Mane, then showed it to Lamar. It was first thought to belong on Mike Will's Ransom 2 until others persuaded Lamar to keep it. He released it with its video on 30 March 2017. It debuted at number two and then topped the Billboard Hot 100, and it is certified 10 times platinum in the US.

Humble won three Grammys at the 60th ceremony: Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song and Best Music Video. Dave Meyers and The Little Homies directed the video, which includes a recreation of The Last Supper and won Video of the Year at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. Pitchfork named it Best New Track on release day. Lamar closed his Coachella set with it on 23 April 2017 and played it at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show. Eminem sampled it on Greatest in 2018, and Ne-Yo and Skrillex issued remixes in 2017.
