3:47 EST
Their anonymous debut, named after the time the alien arrives in the film, with eight tracks and no credits on the sleeve.
Klaatu, 1976
3:47 EST was recorded over a period running from January 1, 1973 to August 1975 and produced by Terry Brown and Klaatu, with Steve Vaughn and Brown engineering and Brian Bell and Paul Barker as tape operators; the studio is not stated. All songs were credited to Klaatu on the sleeve. Doug Riley arranged the orchestra, Vern Dorge played chimes on "Sub-Rosa Subway", Bruce Cassidy trumpet on "Doctor Marvello", and Dave Kennedy guitars on "California Jam". The title refers to the time the alien Klaatu arrives in Washington in the film.
It reached number 40 in Canada, 32 in the US, 35 in Germany and 17 in Austria, and went gold in Canada (50,000) and Australia (20,000). Pitchfork called it a wonderfully weird cross-section of Beatles-esque psych pop and 70s prog, and AllMusic gave it three stars while giving the Klaatu and Hope pairing four.
