Up with People

The fourth track on Nixon, which begins with a single guitar and builds to a full gospel choir.
Lambchop, from Nixon (2000)

"Up with People" was written by Wagner and is track four of Nixon, 5:59. Trouser Press says it starts with a single guitar and builds to a full gospel choir, with Wagner moving between falsetto and baritone, and the A.V. Club says it blends so many disparate influences, including a gospel choir. A single, "Up with People!" backed with "Miss Prissy", was released on May 2, 2000 and reached number 66 on the UK singles chart; Exclaim!'s discography also lists a 1999 Third Gear split 7-inch with Dump, which we have not reconciled with the 2000 single.

We found no statement from Wagner about the song's meaning. One blog reads it as a mood piece in which naive optimism is undercut by lyrics criticizing people who refuse responsibility for cultural excess, and another reviewer suggests the Nixon-era touring choir Up with People as an inspiration, but that is unverified. In 2000 Robert Elms opened his BBC London show with it. Zero 7 remixed it, and Wagner said he liked it, since the more radical the deconstruction the better really; City Slang reportedly said the remix reached the singles chart, but we found no position. We have no setlist.fm count, covers or samples, and do not know which version our upload carries.
