Stoned Soul Picnic
Her song from Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, a number three hit for the 5th Dimension in 1968.
Laura Nyro, from Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968)
Nyro's own recording is track eight of Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, 3:47, released as a single in October 1968 backed with "Sweet Blindness". The word "surry" in the lyrics is her own coinage: asked by Calello what it meant, she said it was just a nice word. The 5th Dimension's version, produced by Bones Howe and released in May 1968 on Soul City (3:30, backed with "The Sailboat Song"), reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the R&B chart, and was certified platinum, with Mike Deasy, Joe Osborn, Hal Blaine, Larry Knechtel and Jimmy Rowles among the session players. Roy Ayers made it the title track of a 1968 instrumental album, and her 1997 compilation took its name.
Julie London (1969), Swing Out Sister (1997), Laura Love (2000), Jill Sobule (2001), Claire Teal (2004), New York Voices (2007) and Billy Childs with Ledisi (2014) have recorded it, and it was sampled by Crystal Waters (1994), Madison Avenue (2000) and the Go! Team (2004). Setlist.fm lists 24 performances, third among her songs behind "And When I Die" and "Save the Country". Which version our upload is has not been confirmed.
