Her record company and Asher were both reluctant, but her determination won them over. It was recorded at The Complex in Los Angeles between 30 June 1982 and 4 March 1983 with Nelson Riddle arranging and conducting, and George Massenburg engineering. Ronstadt later called the songs little jewels of artistic expression that she was rescuing from riding up and down on the elevators.
It spent 81 weeks on the Billboard album chart and held number three for five consecutive weeks behind Thriller and Can't Slow Down. It reached number two on the jazz albums chart, was certified triple platinum in the US, and sold over five million copies worldwide. It earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, and the title song reached number 53 on the Hot 100.
