"Expansions" was written by Smith and is the first track on the album, 6:04, recorded on November 25 and 26, 1974 in New York. He told the Guardian in 2023 that he wrote it because he was studying spirituality and realized that everyone wants the same thing, peace, love and harmony; it was the first time he wrote lyrics, to put a positive message with dance music. Gilles Peterson called it as important a song as A Love Supreme for the jazz-funk generation. The seven-inch was a London dancefloor favorite at the 100 Club and Crackers, and was played by Louis Vega at the Sound Factory in New York.
Stetsasonic sampled it on "Talkin' All That Jazz", Roni Size on "It's a Jazz Thing", and Mike D mentions it in "Professor Booty"; Butcher Brown covered it in a recent project with Smith. It appears in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Driver: Parallel Lines. Smith performed it after the Red Bull Music Academy lecture in Bristol in 2015. No charts or setlist counts were found, and our upload cannot be told from the album version without listening.
