Sunshowers was released in July 2004 as her first record on XL Recordings, with Fire Fire on the B-side. She composed it on the Roland MC-505. The chorus interpolates Sunshower by Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, and the credited writers are M.I.A., Ross Orton, Steve Mackey, August Darnell and Stony Browder. Nesreen Shah sings the chorus vocal, and Cavemen produced it.
The designer Matthew Williamson opened and closed his New York fashion week show with the song in September 2004. Rajesh Touchriver directed the video in the jungles of South India, and M.I.A. has often named it her favorite video. Slant ranked the song number 100 on its list of the best singles of the decade. Rye Rye's 2011 track New Thing samples its lyrics.
