Confessions on a Dance Floor

A continuous club set made with Stuart Price, with an ABBA sample on Hung Up.
Madonna, 2005

Released
November 2005
Label
Warner Bros.
Producer
Stuart Price

Madonna began with Mirwais Ahmadzaï, who had produced much of Music, but felt the collaboration was not going the way she wanted and turned to Stuart Price, musical director of her two previous tours. Most of the album was recorded at Price's home. The first three songs written were Hung Up, Sorry and Future Lovers. The record is sequenced and blended like a DJ set, so the songs play without gaps. Hung Up samples ABBA's Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight), and Madonna wrote a personal letter to Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, who allowed the sample.

Hung Up topped the charts in 41 countries and Sorry became her twelfth UK number one. The album topped the charts in 40 countries, sold more than 3.6 million copies in its first week and over 10 million overall, and won the Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album. Metacritic averages 80 from 28 reviews. The Confessions Tour followed in 2006. A sequel, Confessions II, again made with Price, came out on 3 July 2026.
