Madonna co-wrote and co-produced every track with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray. Development began in December 1985 and was complete by April 1986. Live to Tell began as an instrumental Leonard wrote for the film Fire with Fire. Papa Don't Preach, written by Brian Elliot. La Isla Bonita started as an instrumental demo by Leonard and Bruce Gaitsch for Michael Jackson. She dedicated the album to Sean Penn, the coolest guy in the universe, and took the title from one of his favorite expressions. Herb Ritts photographed the cover.
Released on 30 June 1986, it topped the charts in 28 countries, spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 and produced five singles: Live to Tell, Papa Don't Preach and Open Your Heart, all Hot 100 number ones, and True Blue and La Isla Bonita, both top five. It was the best-selling album of 1986 and has sold more than 25 million copies.
