It began at Thanksgiving 1998 in Nashville, when Harris added vocals to Red Staggerwing and Donkey Town. Further sessions followed in 2002 and 2004, fitted around her Stumble into Grace and his Shangri-La. Knopfler wrote ten of the twelve songs, and Harris brought Belle Starr and, with Kimmie Rhodes, Love and Happiness. If This Is Goodbye was inspired by the last phone calls from passengers on United Airlines Flight 93.
It reached number one in Denmark, Norway and Switzerland, number eight in the UK and number 17 on the Billboard 200. This Is Us reached number five on the US adult alternative chart, and the title song was a UK number eight single. Reviews ranged from a match made in heaven in the Winnipeg Sun to oddly matched in Entertainment Weekly. A twentieth anniversary reissue in 2026 added Dolby Atmos mixes by Guy Fletcher.
