Neil Dorfsman engineered the sessions in New York and London, and the ceilidh scenes were taped on 19 June 1982 in a hall near Banff in Scotland. Michael Brecker, Tony Levin, Steve Jordan and Alan Clark are among the players, and Gerry Rafferty sings The Way It Always Starts. It reached number 14 in the UK and earned a BAFTA nomination for best score.

The closing Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero became an anthem at Newcastle United and Aberdeen home games. It was re-recorded for the 2014 Great North Run and again in 2024 by Mark Knopfler's Guitar Heroes, a cast that included Bruce Springsteen, Brian May and Jeff Beck.
