Going Home is an instrumental and the closing track of the 1983 Local Hero soundtrack. Michael Brecker plays the saxophone. It was Knopfler's first solo single and reached number 56 in the UK, 26 in the Netherlands and 18 in New Zealand. The video shows Knopfler playing on the New York waterfront, cut with scenes from the film.

Dire Straits played Going Home and Wild Theme as the closing songs of their concerts, and Knopfler performed Going Home live from 1982 to 1985 and at an Italian show in late 1992. Newcastle United play it as the team runs out before every home game, and Aberdeen use it too. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards covered it in 2003 and re-recorded it with Knopfler on guitar in 2005. In March 2024 more than sixty musicians billed as Mark Knopfler's Guitar Heroes recorded a version of about nine minutes for Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America, produced by Guy Fletcher at British Grove Studios. It was Jeff Beck's final recording before his death, and Peter Blake designed the sleeve. It reached number 18 in the UK.
