Blue in Green
A ten-measure ballad with a disputed author, and the only Kind of Blue track without Cannonball Adderley.
Miles Davis, from Kind of Blue (1959)
- Written by
- Miles Davis, Bill Evans
- Released
- 17 August 1959
- Album
- Kind of Blue
Recorded on 2 March 1959, it is one of the album's two ballads. After a four-measure introduction it moves through a ten-measure circular form. Only the fifth take was complete, after four breakdowns, and the solos run Davis, Evans, Coltrane, Evans and Davis. Ted Gioia described it as more a meditation than a song.
Who wrote it is disputed. The original LP credited only Davis. Evans said in a 1979 radio interview that the music exists and Miles is getting the royalties, and it has been alleged that Davis paid him 25 dollars. Davis reportedly told Quincy Troupe in 1986 that they wrote it together, and Evans's own trio record Portrait in Jazz credits it to Davis and Evans. Earl Zindars called it entirely Bill's.
