Moon Dreams was written in 1942 by Chummy MacGregor and Johnny Mercer, and first recorded by Martha Tilton on Capitol Records. Glenn Miller recorded it for V-Disc release in 1944. Davis first performed it in New York in 1948, a performance that appears on The Complete Birth of the Cool. The studio version was recorded on 9 March 1950 with an arrangement by Gil Evans, and Pitchfork called it the intriguing highlight of the collection.

The Davis recording later appeared in Ken Burns's PBS series Jazz and in a 2008 episode of The Simpsons. Gerry Mulligan recorded it again on the 1992 album The Re-Birth of the Cool.
