Riperton asked for Wonder as producer, and he was under a Motown contract, which is why he is credited as El Toro Negro, with Rudolph's Scorbu Productions. Wonder played piano, electric piano, drums and harmonica, Marlo Henderson and Michael Sembello guitar, Reggie McBride bass and Ollie E. Brown drums, with backing vocals from Deniece Williams, Yvonne Wright, Shirley Brewer and Lani Groves. Wonder wanted one more song to bring the album closer to 40 minutes, and "Lovin' You" was added. Its singles were "Reasons" (May 28, 1974), "Seeing You This Way" (August 21, 1974) and "Lovin' You" (November 29, 1974), and a deluxe two-CD edition followed in December 2017. The infobox gives the release as May 24 and the text as June 1974.
BBC's Daryl Easlea called it one of the most joyous soul-rock hybrids ever released. Christgau gave it a B.
