Bury Me Beneath the Willow

A traditional ballad, recorded by Tuttle in 2023 for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Molly Tuttle (2023)

"Bury Me Beneath the Willow" is a traditional ballad, Roud 410, of unknown authorship, whose earliest citation is a Missouri Folk-Lore Society collection under the title "Under the Willow Tree". Early recordings include Dick Burnett and Leonard Rutherford and the Carter Family in 1927, the Shelton Brothers and Curly Fox in 1936 and the Delmore Brothers in 1938; later came Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice (1980), Rosanne Cash (2010) and Emmylou Harris (2011). Tuttle's version is track seven, 3:42, on the soundtrack The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (Geffen, November 17, 2023); Wikipedia's table credits it to Tuttle, which can be at most an arrangement.

She told Holler on November 30, 2023 that Dave Cobb called about a year and a half before to ask her to play guitar on the film, that she and Dominick Leslie went to Savannah for a couple of weeks and recorded the songs heard throughout the movie, and that in summer 2023 Cobb asked for a song for the album, and the producers wanted the traditional ballad. It was recorded in Portland, Oregon, in a studio Cobb found, early on the morning of a show, with Tuttle and Leslie playing; they had both played the song since they were kids and played it as they naturally would in a jam. Saving Country Music called it a great showcase for Tuttle's talents, including her flatpicking. The soundtrack reached number one on the UK soundtrack chart and three in the US.
